How to Prepare for Blood Donation (and Recover Well)
A little preparation makes donating blood quick, comfortable and safe. Here is how to feel your best before, during and after.
The day before
- Eat iron‑rich foods such as beans, lentils, leafy greens, red meat or fish to support healthy haemoglobin.
- Sleep well — aim for a full night's rest.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
On donation day
- Have a good meal a few hours before — don't donate on an empty stomach. Avoid very fatty foods just before.
- Drink an extra glass or two of water before you arrive.
- Bring a valid ID and wear clothing with sleeves that roll up easily.
- Relax. The donation itself usually takes only about 8–10 minutes.
Right after donating
- Rest for a few minutes and have the snack and drink offered to you.
- Keep the bandage on for a few hours and avoid heavy lifting with that arm for the rest of the day.
- Drink extra fluids over the next 24 hours and avoid alcohol and strenuous exercise that day.
- If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down until it passes. This is normal and brief for most people.
How often can I donate?
Your body replaces the fluid quickly, but it needs time to rebuild red cells. A rest period — commonly about 8 to 12 weeks between whole‑blood donations — is required. See our eligibility guide for details.
